HERMA returns containers for reconditioning

In 2017, self-adhesive materials expert HERMA collected a total of 1,058 so-called Intermediate Bulk Containers, which are used for transport and storage of bulk liquid and granulated substances, to undergo eco-friendly reconditioning. Compared with the use of newly produced containers, this has saved 44.4 tons of steel, 16.9 tons of plastic, and 105.8 tons of CO2 emissions. “By participating in the reconditioning program, we do not only aim at preserving the environment, but also at counteracting current resource shortages to some extent”, explains Dr. Thomas Baumgärtner, HERMA managing director and head of the Self-adhesive Materials Division.

Sophisticated substrates lead the charge in label sector growth

Sophisticated label substrates have experienced exponential growth due to demand for high-end applications according FINAT’s latest findings. Since 2010 demand for PP-based materials has grown 78%, direct thermal papers are up 51% and white coated papers enjoyed a 24% increase. The figures show that while paper based materials continue to dominate label materials demand, there has been a shift from basic primary and VIP labels towards more sophisticated, high-end applications.

Smurfit Kappa Group is pleased to announce that it has completed the acquisition of Reparenco, a paper and recycling business in the Netherlands. The acquisition represents a transaction multiple, pre-synergies, of 6.4x Reparenco's 2018 expected full year EBITDA of ?72million. Reparenco's strong strategic fit with SKG's existing European businesses is expected to deliver synergies of in excess of ?30 million. Rondo AG based in Allschwil near Basel (Switzerland), part of the international Körber Group in Hamburg, is conducting the world’s first beta test in the area of pharmaceutical packaging with the Primefire 106. The digital printing system of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been installed at Rondo since April 2018, where it is the final piece in the packaging specialist’s Supply on Demand solution. “The trends in the pharmaceutical industry are heading towards ever declining runs and shorter delivery times in response to personalized medicine, increasing language and country versions and much shorter delivery times for medicines,” confirms Joachim Hoeltz, CEO of Rondo AG. “Our production consists entirely of secondary packaging. Through process automation and close IT integration we offer our customers a just-in-time service and by doing so help them to optimize their own supply chain.”

Coding consumables loyalty programs launched to improve uptime and costs
